The Benefits of Outdoor Sand Play

Opportunities for

Socialization and Collaboration

Many children will gravitate to an open sandbox. It is among the most simple toys, but one of the most gratifying: the freedom of possibility plus the soft feel of the sand and its texture. Some adults still enjoy playing in the sand while at the beach or lakefront, working alongside children to build castles or waterways. Why? Among all of its benefits, sand play is just good fun!

Here are a few reasons why we encourage children to engage in sand play:

  • They learn how to socialize and collaborate. While playing in a sandbox or standing at a sand table, children must engage in discussions about sharing tools, using buckets, and navigating the space. Children can work together to build and create.
  • They learn how to respect boundaries in play. Sand play requires understanding and following boundaries. For example, children learn that they cannot dump sand on fellow students, and they shouldn’t knock down someone else’s creation without permission.
  • They work on gross motor skill development. Digging, pouring, lifting, pushing—there are many gross motor skills involved in active sand play.
  • They hone their hand-eye coordination. When carefully pouring or shoveling sand to fill a bucket, they are concentrating on the activity. This engages their hand-eye coordination to complete the task.
  • They are introduced to science and mathematics skills. Sand play is a great way to introduce children to the concept of measurements: What fits and what doesn’t? How much sand does it take to fill a bucket?
